The Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) announced plans to construct safety improvements on U.S. 81/287 at three crossovers south of Rhome early next year, including a traffic light on the highway.

A traffic signal will be installed on US 81/287 at County Road 4840. The project will also add illumination and advance warning signs to alert drivers approaching the intersection, TxDOT said. To the north and south of this newly signalized intersection, illumination and warning signs will be added on U.S. 81/287 at County Road 4838 and County Road 4843 (Ramhorn Hill Road).

Preliminary work is underway, with construction estimated to occur in early 2025, weather permitting, according to the announcement Wednesday.

TxDOT also said a schematic and environmental assessment underway for a future project with plans to reconstruct the main lanes and frontage roads from Pioneer Road north of Rhome to Avondale-Haslet Road in Fort Worth.

This would include new overpasses at County Road 4840 and future Northstar Parkway, a new underpass at County Road 4843, and new direct connectors at SH 114. Additionally, the proposed project would include operational improvements to existing cross streets, ramps and auxiliary lanes.

TxDOT said it is working with local entities to pursue opportunities to advance these projects.
