A month after demanding and receiving her release from the University of Texas, softball standout Brittany Barnhill has landed a new gig. The pitcher took an official visit to the University of Mississippi over the weekend and sealed the deal before returning home Monday.

Pressure reached an all-time high Tuesday night in the area championship baseball game between the Decatur Eagles and the Burnet Bulldogs at Summit High School in Mansfield. With the bases loaded for Burnet and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Decatur pitcher Justin Tompkins forced the final ground-out to cap a nine-strikeout, six-hit outing that gave the Eagles a 5-3 victory and a spot in the Class 3A regional quarterfinals.

The good news for Decatur, Paradise and Bridgeport high schools is that they will be representing Wise County in the state playoffs this year. The not so good news is that all three have been waiting out the swine flu scare before returning to the diamond and have not played a game in two weeks since wrapping up district play.

UIL changes start date for playoffs again

The University Interscholastic League decided Wednesday that the first round of the state softball playoffs is to be completed by May 12 after suspending all play because of the swine flu scare. Based on Texas Education Agency and Department of State Health Services recommendations that all schools across the state of Texas reopen, the UIL rescinded its suspension of all interscholastic competitions and said teams could resume play last Thursday.

TODAY'S UPDATE
NEW BOUNDARIES - The Decatur School Board last night approved new elementary attendance boundaries to take effect with the opening of the district's third elementary next fall. Generally, areas on the west side of the district are zoned into Rann Elementary, areas on the east side of the district are zoned into Carson Elementary and southern areas of the district including much of the downtown area of Decatur are zoned into Young Elementary.
